All About the New Paradise...

The New Paradise Indian Takeaway was bought in 2000 by Rafan Khan, with the mission of providing only the finest, authentic Indian Cuisine to the people of Horbury. Since then, the business has grown to become one of the most popular takeways in the area, with many regular customers coming back week after week, year after year... The New Paradise reputation for excellence also extends to outside catering, with private parties catered for. But it's not just about business... Rafan is truly committed to involvement in the community, including sponsorship of the Horbury Show and working with local schools, as well as many charitable interests.

Many people know that Chicken Tikka Masala has become Britain's favourite dish, but Europe's love affair with spicy Indian food goes back much further than most realise... In fact, Christopher Columbus only discovered America by mistake - he thought he had found a shortcut to India, and was motivated by the very lucrative spice trade. Centuries later, the British Empire was largely driven onwards by the desire of traders to get a piece of the spice trade. Before long it wasn't just the spices of the East which were in demand in Britain, and the first recipe for "Currey" in an English cookery book appeared as long ago as 1747! In the 20th century, immigration to the UK from Southern Asia bought authentic Indian food to every town in Britain, and the dishes we all know and love - including Chicken Tikka Masala - evolved into the forms we know today.

A taste of curry and Asian cuisine was on the menu when Netherton J&I School pupils spiced up their timetable and lunch menu. Local chef Rafan Khan from the New Paradise takeaway showed them how to make onion bhajis and a range of curry dishes. Food technology co-ordinator at the school, Andrea Rosamund, said pupils had thoroughly enjoyed their culinary experience and had taken on board the cooking tips of Mr Khan. “Pupils always enjoy hands on experiences and Mr Khan was wonderful with them and showed them all about Indian Food.”Wakefield Express, 2005
One teenage Huddersfield chef is putting his faith in one ingredient in particular - a giant green chili. Rafan Khan, 18, has been saving up an African chili for the big day [of judging for the Curry Chef of the Year Award 1998]... “It’s my secret weapon” said Mr Khan. “It’s not hot but it improves the taste”.Huddersfield Examiner, 1998
